About Rosalie

Rosalie is a village of 159 on Spur S-87B, about 2.5 miles west of US 77 in southern Thurston County, within the Omaha Reservation. The BNSF railroad runs through town. Walthill is about 9 miles north and Bancroft about 5 miles southwest.

History

Rosalie was platted in 1906 as the Sioux City & Western railroad, soon part of the Burlington, was built through the county; the line was completed in 1907 and is still operated by BNSF. The village is named for Rosalie La Flesche Farley, daughter of Omaha chief Joseph La Flesche, who managed the tribe's finances and married Edward Farley of Bancroft. Her sisters were Susette "Bright Eyes" La Flesche and Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte.

The population peaked at 321 in 1920. Rosalie and Bancroft schools merged in 1982 to form Bancroft-Rosalie Community Schools, based in Bancroft.
