Pilger is a small village in northern Stanton County, Nebraska, situated on Nebraska Highway 57 approximately 9 miles north of Stanton. An agricultural community of modest size, Pilger gained national and international attention on June 16, 2014, when two simultaneous tornadoes — an exceptionally rare meteorological event — struck the village and caused catastrophic damage.

The 2014 Pilger tornadoes remain one of the most significant tornado events in Nebraska history. Two supercell thunderstorms produced tornadoes at the same time, with the larger rated EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, carrying winds estimated above 200 mph and a path width approaching one mile. The twin tornadoes caused catastrophic damage to Pilger, destroying or heavily damaging a significant portion of the community's structures. Two lives were lost and at least 19 people were seriously injured. Photographs and video of the simultaneous twin tornadoes approaching the village were broadcast worldwide and became iconic images in storm documentation.

In the years following the 2014 event, Pilger demonstrated the resilience characteristic of small Nebraska towns. The community rebuilt, supported by state and federal agencies and the outpouring of help from neighboring communities. History

Pilger was established in the late 19th century as settlers moved into northern Stanton County. The village grew as an agricultural service community, providing essential goods and services to nearby farming families. Like many small Nebraska villages, Pilger reached its peak population in the early 20th century and experienced gradual decline as agricultural mechanization reduced the farm labor force.

Before June 16, 2014, Pilger was a quiet agricultural village little known outside northeastern Nebraska. The twin tornado event that afternoon fundamentally changed the town's story. The rare simultaneous occurrence of two large tornadoes — documented by storm chasers and broadcast live — drew meteorologists, journalists, and researchers from around the world. The National Weather Service conducted an extensive ground-truth survey of the damage paths. The event has since been studied as one of the most dramatic tornado occurrences in the Great Plains record.

The community's recovery began immediately. Neighbors, volunteers, and emergency management teams worked through the summer of 2014 to clear debris, restore utilities, and begin rebuilding. Local resolve and outside assistance allowed the village to stabilize and continue as a living community rather than an abandoned site.
