Bingham is an unincorporated community in southeastern Sheridan County, strung along Nebraska Highway 2 in the heart of the Nebraska Sandhills, about 52 miles south-southeast of Rushville, the county seat. It sits at roughly 42.021° N, 102.089° W at an elevation of about 3,890 feet, in the South Sheridan election precinct, and — like the rest of Sheridan County — keeps Mountain Time.

The Bingham post office was established in 1888, placing the community squarely in the wave of settlement that followed the railroad west across the Sandhills. It belongs to the same chain of rail-era stops as Ellsworth, Lakeside, Ashby and Hyannis, each spaced a few miles apart along the line and the highway that follows it.

The origin of the name has never been settled. Local accounts variously credit an early pioneer settler, a railroad official involved in laying out the line, or Bingham Lake in Minnesota — a borrowing pattern seen elsewhere among Sandhills rail-stop names. Bingham was never incorporated, and today it is a small ranching crossroads rather than a town with its own government.

Bingham sits near the county's southern edge, closer to the Grant County line than to anything else in its own county.

Along the Highway 2 corridor. Ashby lies about 8 miles east in Grant County and Ellsworth about 10 miles west-northwest. Hyannis, the Grant County seat and the nearest town of any size, is about 17 miles east; Lakeside is about 18 miles west and Antioch about 26 miles west.

Farther afield. Alliance, the Box Butte County seat and the western anchor of this stretch of Highway 2, is about 41 miles west. The Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway. Bingham sits directly on Nebraska Highway 2, which between Grand Island and Alliance is designated the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway. For most travellers this is the point of Bingham: it is one of the small, widely spaced places that give the drive its character, set among grass-covered dunes, wet meadows and shallow Sandhills lakes.

The railroad. The rail line that created Bingham in the 1880s still runs beside the highway and remains one of the busiest freight corridors in the state, carrying coal trains east out of the Powder River Basin. The community's short First Street reflects its origin as an 1888 rail and post-office stop.

Events. Bingham is unincorporated and has no chamber of commerce, and no recurring public event held in Bingham itself could be independently verified. Travellers looking for events in this part of the Sandhills should check Hyannis and Alliance, and the wider Sheridan County listings.

Education & Health

Schools. There is no school in Bingham. This corner of southeastern Sheridan County falls within Hyannis Area Schools, a small district whose boundary reaches out of Grant County into both Sheridan and Cherry counties and which enrolled roughly 143 students as of 2021. The school is in Hyannis, about 17 miles east along Highway 2. Sheridan County's other district, Gordon-Rushville Public Schools, serves Gordon, Rushville, Merriman, Clinton and White Clay in the north of the county, more than 50 miles away.

Health care. The nearest hospital is Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, about 41 miles west. Closer to hand, Box Butte General runs a family-medicine clinic — Greater Nebraska Medical & Surgical Services — at the Cow Country Health Center, 111 S. Main Avenue in Hyannis, about 17 miles east, currently open on Mondays. For anything urgent, Alliance is the realistic destination.

Highway Access

Nebraska Highway 2 is the only numbered highway serving Bingham, and it runs straight through the community east to west. Eastward it passes Ashby and Hyannis and continues across the Sandhills toward Thedford, Broken Bow and eventually Grand Island. Westward it runs by Ellsworth, Lakeside and Antioch to Alliance, where it meets U.S. Route 385.

No other route reaches Bingham directly. There is no interstate anywhere near — Interstate 80 lies well over a hundred miles to the south — and the county roads leading off Highway 2 here serve ranches rather than through traffic. In winter this matters: Highway 2 is the only reliable way in or out, so check Nebraska 511 before setting off.

Rail. The BNSF line beside the highway carries freight, not passengers; there is no passenger rail service anywhere in the Sandhills.
