Antioch, Nebraska
Antioch is a small unincorporated community in Sheridan County, Nebraska, about 15 miles east of Alliance on Nebraska Highway 2. Named after Antioch, Ohio, it was little more than a schoolhouse, a church, and a store before World War I — and then, for a few remarkable years, it became "the potash capital of Nebraska."
Today Antioch has fewer than 25 residents, but its brief boomtown past is preserved on the National Register of Historic Places, and a historical marker tells the story of the potash factories that once drew thousands of workers to this quiet stretch of the Sandhills.
History
Before World War I, potash — a key ingredient in fertilizer, Epsom salts, and soda products — was imported almost entirely from Germany at $8 to $10 a ton. Wartime scarcity sent prices as high as $150 a ton, and in 1917 University of Nebraska scientists developed a method to distill potash from the alkaline lake water abundant around Antioch. Five major reduction factories — American, Nebraska, Alliance, National, and Western — sprang up almost overnight, built on state-owned land leased to the companies. By the spring of 1918, Antioch's population had exploded to more than 5,000 people, transforming a tiny rail stop into a genuine boomtown.
The boom ended almost as fast as it began. When Germany and France resumed potash trade in 1921, cheaper foreign supply collapsed the market overnight. Every factory closed immediately; machinery was scrapped and buildings demolished. Antioch's population fell back to a fraction of its wartime peak, and the potash plant ruins were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
