History

Terry Carpenter, a Scottsbluff businessman who had served in Congress in 1933–35 and ran Nebraska's only gasoline refinery, founded Terrytown in 1949; it was recognized as a village on June 2, 1949, after an earlier attempt to incorporate in 1937 failed. Carpenter, later a long-serving state senator, built a radio station, two restaurants and the Carena Drive-In, and his Terry's Arena, in the 1950s the largest in the state, brought Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie before it burned in 1968. Terrytown sold liquor by the drink before Scottsbluff did. The population reached 1,198 in 2010, and it is now a city.
