About Rescue
Rescue is a vanished hamlet in Chester Township, northwestern Saunders County, about 4 miles northwest of Prague. Nothing of it is known to remain.
History
Settlers came to Chester precinct from 1870, many from Iowa, and endured prairie fires in 1871 and 1872, the April 1873 blizzard and grasshoppers in 1873–74. The Rescue post office opened on June 23, 1874, with Milton M. Runyan as postmaster, probably as a farm post office; it closed in 1900 and reopened from 1903 to 1933 under Mary Palensky. The origin of the name is not known.
Rescue later stood on the Burlington and had an elevator (burned in the late 1920s), a garage, a grocery and a dance hall, and later Anton Wirka's machine shop. After the railroad pulled up its tracks, the town died out.
