About Malmo

Malmo is a village of 94 in Saunders County, about 6 miles northwest of Wahoo and 4 miles north of NE 92. Its Edensburg Lutheran Church dates from the Swedish settlement of 1870.

History

Swedish settlers organized Edensburg Lutheran Church on April 25, 1870, in Lars P. Bruce's dugout, and the settlement and its post office (1883–1886) were called Edensburg. When the Burlington's Schuyler branch came through in 1886–87, the town was laid out on land bought from Jerry Fisher and renamed for Malmö, Sweden. The church, called the birthplace of the Augustana Nebraska Conference (1886) and of its Women's Missionary Society (1906), moved into town in 1890 and built the present church in 1914.

The population peaked at 259 in 1900. The district high school closed in 1958.
