About Colon
Colon is a village of 107 on NE 109 in Saunders County, about 6 miles north of Wahoo. Its brick St. Joseph Catholic Church was dedicated in 1919.
History
A post office called Colan opened in 1872, and in 1879 Leander Taylor, from Colon, Michigan, set up the Colon post office about a mile south of the first site. When the Chicago & North Western built its line through in 1886, the village was platted on Martin Van Fleet's land at the tracks, and it incorporated on December 1, 1894. Passenger service ran until 1940, and the line closed in 1982.
The Sand Creek (Holy Rosary) Catholic church of 1884 was closed in 1918, and St. Joseph's in Colon replaced it the next year; St. Mary's in Cedar Bluffs is its mission. The population peaked at 193 in 1900. Omaha lawyer Emmett Louis Murphy, a Nebraska assistant attorney general, was born here.
