About Cedar Bluffs
Cedar Bluffs is a village of 615 on NE 109 in northern Saunders County, about 6 miles southwest of Fremont across the Platte. It has Cedar Bluffs Public Schools (pre-K through 12), St. Matthew Lutheran and St. Mary Catholic churches.
History
The village was founded in 1886 on the Chicago & North Western's Lincoln line and incorporated in 1887 with about 200 people. It was named for a steep bluff on the Platte about 2½ miles north where cedar trees grew. The first Mass in the area was said in 1869 in Michael Malloy's dugout, and Lutheran services began in 1876. A tornado on March 14, 1919, destroyed St. Matthew's church and school.
Nearby on the Platte is Pahuk, a bluff sacred to the Pawnee and listed on the National Register; it is on private land. The population peaked at 632 in 1980.
