Springfield was platted in 1873 by Civil War veteran J.D. Spearman in anticipation of the Missouri Pacific Railroad's arrival, and takes its name from natural springs located nearby.
The smallest of Sarpy County's five incorporated municipalities, Springfield hosts the annual Sarpy County Fair each August and lies along the MoPac Trail, a rail-trail eventually intended to connect Omaha and Lincoln.
