Falls City is the county seat of Richardson County, Nebraska, established in the summer of 1857 by abolitionist settlers James Lane, John Burbank, J.E. Burbank, and Isaac L. Hamby, who set the town up partly as an Underground Railroad station. The city takes its name from the "Falls of the Nemaha," a rock ledge where the Big Nemaha River once fell before 19th- and 20th-century changes to the river eliminated it.

Home to 4,133 residents at the 2020 Census, Falls City is the hometown of Nebraska governors Dave Heineman, John H. Morehead, and Arthur J. Weaver, and its downtown Commercial Historic District, Gehling's Theatre, and 1924 Richardson County Courthouse are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
