About Barada

Barada is one of Nebraska's smallest villages, with 20 people in 2020, in northeastern Richardson County about 11 miles north of Falls City. No numbered highway reaches it; it sits on county roads in the Barada Hills, the Missouri River bluffs, about 3 miles south-southwest of Indian Cave State Park. Mail comes through Falls City (68355).

History

Firmin Douville and Antoine Barada were the first settlers of Barada precinct, on the former Nemaha Half-Breed Reservation. Barada (1807–1885), the son of Michel Barada and an Omaha woman, was a trader and guide who settled here in 1856 on a 320-acre patent. Stories of his strength, such as lifting a 1,700-pound stone in St. Louis or holding barn beams in place, were collected by folklorists Louise Pound and Mari Sandoz and are told as legends. A post office ran from 1877 to 1963, the population peaked at 147 in 1900, and the village incorporated in 1927. Oil wells near Barada and Falls City were once the largest oil field in Nebraska.
