About Lorton

Lorton is a village of 35 in southern Otoe County, where NE 67 and NE 128 run together, about 10 miles west-southwest of Nebraska City and 4.5 miles north of Talmage. Some Lorton addresses use the Dunbar ZIP code, 68346.

History

Lorton was platted in 1881 as Delta, and the Delta post office opened in 1882. Because Kansas already had a Delta, the Missouri Pacific called its station Cio, so for years mail went to Delta and freight to Cio. In 1894 the town took the name of Robert Lorton, a well-liked wholesale grocery salesman from Nebraska City. Four trains a day ran on the Talmage–Weeping Water line, and early Lorton had a bank, a hotel, an opera house, two elevators and a Baptist church.

Several businesses closed in the 1930s and World War II, and the 1950 flood washed out the tracks and ended rail service. The hamlet of Paul lies east of Lorton on NE 128.
