About Almeria

Almeria is an unincorporated community on NE 91 in the North Loup River valley in western Loup County, at about 2,333 feet and about 8 miles west-northwest of Taylor. It is North Loup valley ranch country, with hay meadows along the river and Sandhills rising on either side. The community hall still hosts local gatherings, and Almeria is on the route of the Junk Jaunt each September.

History

George Wesley (Wess) Strohl founded Almeria and named it for his wife, Almeria Strohl; the name has nothing to do with the city in Spain. When Loup County chose its seat in 1883, Almeria, backed by Kent, lost to Taylor by two votes, and Strohl’s 1884 lawsuit over the voting was dismissed. In 1890 Almeria was a village of about 75 people with a Methodist church and a hotel. It never had a railroad and never incorporated.
