About Hickman

Hickman is a city of 2,607 people (2020) in southern Lancaster County, at 1,270 feet about 13 miles south of downtown Lincoln. It grew from 1,657 in 2010, more than half again in ten years, and is a commuter town for Lincoln. Stagecoach and Wagon Train state recreation areas are just outside town. Hickman is on Central Time.

History

The Rev. C. H. Heckman bought land near Salt Creek, and he and Samuel Egger platted the town in 1872 after the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad agreed to a station on its Rulo–Lincoln line. The plat was recorded with the name misspelled “Hickman,” and the name stuck. The town was incorporated in 1885. By 1890 it had about 300 people and was served by the Burlington’s A&N line and a Missouri Pacific branch from Crete to Talmage. It has grown at every census since 1950, and fastest since 2000.
