History

Settlement began in the early 1870s as the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad built toward Lincoln. The post office opened in 1872, named for Frank Firth, a superintendent of the railroad, and the village was incorporated in 1879. It had about 230 people in 1880 and about 500 in 1890, when it shipped grain and livestock. A brick school built in 1916 stood until 1971, seven years after Firth joined the new Norris district in 1964. The Lakeview Rest Home was built in the 1970s on land given by Henry and Bertha TeKolste. Orah Dee Clark, Alaska’s first superintendent of schools, was born in Firth.
