About Pishelville

Pishelville (also spelled Pischelville) is a former post office settlement in northwestern Knox County, reached by county roads about 9 miles southwest of Niobrara and 13 miles northwest of Verdigre. The Rad Sladkovsky lodge hall and the National Cemetery remain.

History

Pishelville is named for Anton Pischel, a Bavarian immigrant who had been a tailor for the soldiers at Fort Randall. The post office opened in 1874 and closed in 1927. At its height the settlement had a trading post, general store, blacksmith shop (open until 1954), sawmill, flour mill, school and hall. In 1890 it had V. Jilek's flour mill, John Kanovsky's blacksmith shop and E. L. Pischel's general store.

Czech families farmed the area by the 1890s. Vaclav Hvizdalek built the Rad Sladkovsky hall in 1884 for a Czech fraternal lodge that joined the Z.C.B.J. in 1897; the hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
