About Mars
Mars is a ghost town in southern Knox County, just north of the Antelope County line and about 7 miles north of Royal. Nothing remains of the town.
History
Samuel Haskin founded the town of Jessup, just south across the county line, in 1879, but without a railroad it declined. In 1886 residents moved the post office about 100 yards north into Knox County and named it Mars to go with nearby Venus. In 1890 it had about 30 people, H. E. Charles's general store and postmaster Charles Joerissen; Creighton was the nearest railroad station.
The store closed by 1897, mail service ended in 1910 and the Mars School lasted until 1960.
