About Creighton
Creighton is the largest city in Knox County, with 1,147 people, where NE 13 meets NE 59 in the south of the county. It has Avera Creighton Hospital, the only hospital in the county, public and Catholic schools, groceries, a motel, the Creighton Historical Center and Bruce Park.
History
Omaha merchant J. A. Bruce organized a colony of about 20 Omaha families, who arrived in April 1871; Bruce built the first frame house that year. The post office opened in the winter of 1871–72, and the town was platted in 1874. It is named for the Creighton family of Omaha. The Chicago & North Western reached Creighton on June 3, 1881, and the town was incorporated in 1882; it became a second-class city in 1907.
The Creighton Regulator began in 1882, the library opened in 1914 and the municipal hall, still in use, in 1916. The Lundberg family and other residents built a hospital in 1953 that is still the county's only hospital. Passenger trains stopped in the 1950s. The population peaked at 1,461 in 1970.
