About Gladstone
Gladstone is an unincorporated community in western Jefferson County, about 7 miles west of Fairbury and a mile north of US 136. It has no census population of its own, and its mail comes through Fairbury.
History
Gladstone was platted in 1886 as the Chicago, Kansas & Nebraska Railway, part of the Rock Island system, built west from Fairbury. M. A. Low, the Rock Island's general attorney, named it for the British statesman William E. Gladstone. In 1890 it was a station 8 miles from Fairbury with about 50 people, a blacksmith, a general store, a hardware store and an implement dealer, and in 1940 the Howell Lumber Company still had a yard here.
