About Endicott

Endicott is a village of 114 in Jefferson County, about 6 miles southeast of Fairbury on the south side of the Little Blue valley. Endicott Clay Products, the county's best-known manufacturer, is just southwest of the village.

History

Endicott was platted in 1880 (Andreas gives 1881) where the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad crossed the St. Joseph & Western. J. H. Tait and his brother owned half the townsite and the Burlington the other half, and Tait was the first postmaster. The name honors William C. Endicott, a Massachusetts jurist whose family held Burlington stock and who later served as Secretary of War under Grover Cleveland. By 1881 the village had the Bills & Hodges bank, then the only bank in the county outside Fairbury, a stone office building and a Presbyterian church, and the population peaked at 256 in 1890.

In 1920 the Fairchild family began making brick from the Dakota clay exposed near the village. Endicott Clay Products now employs about 300 people, fires brick in beehive kilns, and has shipped it across North America; its brick is in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
