Cotesfield is a village of about 29 people (2020) in the North Loup valley of northwestern Howard County, at about 1,900 feet on NE 11, about 6 miles northwest of Elba, whose ZIP code (68835) it uses. Scotia is about 8 miles north-northwest. Cotesfield is on Central Time.

History

Settlers came in the 1870s, and a post office named Cotesfield opened in 1871, named for a Miss Coates, a traveling companion of the daughter of Gen. Christopher C. Augur of the Department of the Platte. The town site was not laid out until 1902; the village reached 214 people in 1920, and its post office closed in 1996. Northwest of town is the Coufal Site, a village of about 1100 CE on private land, now a National Historic Landmark. Czech families farmed the tableland to the south.
