Historical Background

John Carberry, an early Atkinson settler, moved upriver in March 1878 to a timber claim on the future Stuart townsite, carving out a dugout and then a log house that doubled as lodging for settlers streaming into the region. Among the young settlement's most notable figures was Peter Stuart, a Scottish sea captain who arrived with considerable wealth -- fourteen quarter sections of land, a large herd of cattle, sheep, and seventeen pedigreed stallions -- and went on to own an opera house, store, and flour mill. Carberry, who opened the settlement's first store, is generally credited as founder, but he named the new town for his father-in-law Peter Stuart, its first postmaster, after marrying Stuart's daughter Mary and bringing her to live in his log house, the town's first building.

Surveyor John O'Dempsey Nightengale -- the same man who platted Atkinson and Emmet -- surveyed Stuart's townsite in 1881, and the town incorporated in January 1884. Early village ordinances set liquor licenses at $500 apiece, with the proceeds funding local schools, and banned loose pigs and litter from the business district. Wooden sidewalks went in along Main Street in 1885, and two years later the town raised a windmill at the square where Second and Main streets crossed.

The first train reached Stuart in early 1882, and the First National Bank opened the following year, with the "Stuart House" going up as the town's first frame building. A devastating early fire swept through a downtown block, prompting the town to invest four hundred feet of fire hose. Politically the young town leaned Republican for its first two decades before Democrats gained ground by the turn of the century; the two parties eventually merged locally into the Farmer's Alliance, which met in the old depot.

Stuart carries that crossroads character forward today as a small full-service community along the U.S. Highway 20 corridor, six miles west of Atkinson, anchoring the northwest corner of Holt County for the ranching and farming families of the surrounding valleys.
