About Page
Page is a village of 166 in eastern Holt County, about 14 miles east of O'Neill on the paved road locals call Old Highway 108, and 5 miles north of US 20 on Spur 45A, which ends at the south edge of town. Trains still run through Page on the BNSF line between O'Neill and Orchard.
History
Page grew from the Pleasant Valley school district, organized on November 20, 1883, whose sod-banked schoolhouse cost $34. The post office opened on April 12, 1890, with Selinda Page as postmistress, and the town took the Page family's name. The Pacific Short Line railroad arrived the same year. The town was platted in August 1892 where the homesteads of W.W. Page, Robert Gray and R.B. and George Hunter met. A first try at incorporation in 1905 took about seven years to finish. The census peak was 359 in 1930.
An 1893 tornado wrecked the Griest mill and tipped boxcars against the depot. In 1910 robbers dynamited the bank but got nothing, because the cash was hidden under a floorboard. The Page cemetery holds 25 Civil War veterans.
