About Opportunity

Opportunity was a cheese-factory settlement about 16 miles northeast of O'Neill in Holt County, near Redbird Creek on the old O'Neill–Dorsey mail route. Nothing stands at the site today.

History

Around 1910–11 cheesemaker Cox of Plainview built a cheese factory and store with his partner Frost; Frost ran the store and Cox made the cheese. Cox chose the name because cheese gave farmers "an opportunity to get rich off their milk cows." The post office opened in 1910 and replaced the Mineola office in 1913. The Berger brothers built the District 60 school across the road south of the post office.

Farmers hand-milked 15 to 20 cows each for the factory, but milk soured on the long hauls. The factory closed after World War I, when Cox went broke speculating in land. The store, which had a telephone switchboard and later a gas pump, kept the post office until 1943. State Sen. Fern Hubbard Orme was born in the area in 1903.
