About Ashby

Ashby is an unincorporated community on NE 2 and the BNSF main line in western Grant County, at about 3,843 feet, about 9 miles west of Hyannis and 8 miles east of Bingham in Sheridan County. It has its own post office (ZIP 69333), a church, a fire and rescue station and a grain co-op location; schools, the clinic and county offices are in Hyannis. Ashby is on Mountain Time.

History

Ashby began as a station on the Burlington when the line was built west to Alliance in 1888, and a railroad official named it for Ashby, Massachusetts. An Ashby post office was listed in 1890 with about 50 people; the present office dates from February 1908. With the Kinkaid homesteaders the town grew to have a blacksmith shop, a dance hall, two stores, a town hall and three lumberyards, and a school for all twelve grades operated from 1915 to 1930. In March 2026 a wildfire that started near Ashby burned about 36,000 acres in Grant, Sheridan, Garden and Cherry counties; the village was evacuated for a day, and no buildings were lost.
