History
German farmers settled along Clatonia Creek from about 1869, and a rural Clatonia post office dates from 1874. Henry Albert and J. H. Steinmeyer founded the town on the Rock Island's new Chicago–Denver line; it was surveyed in 1892, the plat was filed on December 3, 1893, and the village incorporated about 1893 with Steinmeyer as board chairman. The name comes from the creek. Wilber and Clatonia high schools merged in 1970. The population reached its peak, 296, in 1990.
