Moorefield is one of the smallest villages in Frontier County, first settled in the 1870s and given a post office in 1886 around the time the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached the area. The town was originally known as "Moore's Field," for a settler named Moore who owned the original townsite, later shortened to Moorefield. The village is the birthplace of Eyer L. "Slonnie" Sloniger, born on a farm outside town in 1896, who became a major figure in early American commercial aviation -- he held pilot seniority number one when American Airlines was formed in 1930, was named the airline's first chief pilot in 1934, flew 88 transatlantic crossings during World War II, and was inducted into the Nebraska Aviation Hall of Fame in 2017. Moorefield is served by the Medicine Valley Public Schools district, shared with Curtis. With a 2020 population of just 27, Moorefield has seen one of the steepest declines of any town in the county.

Despite its tiny size, Moorefield's connection to aviation pioneer Slonnie Sloniger gives the village a genuinely notable claim to fame. Today it remains a very small rural hamlet in western Frontier County.
