About Macon

Macon is an unincorporated community near the center of Franklin County, about 7½ miles north of Franklin near NE 10, in Macon Township. Mail goes through Franklin (68939).

History

Settlers reached the Macon prairie in 1871, and about 30 families, most of them Germans and Civil War veterans, came in the summer of 1872, drawn by a lake that turned out to be an old buffalo wallow that dried up. An early settler named the place for his former home, Macon, Georgia, and the post office opened in 1873. Macon was one of the four towns on the 1874 county-seat ballot, which Bloomington won. Thomas Moore, postmaster for 16 years, kept a store until 1903 and helped found the Methodist Episcopal church; in 1890 Macon had about 80 people, a store, a drugstore and two blacksmiths. The railroad never came, and the post office closed in 1955.

The one-room Lone Star School, District 36, which stood just southeast of Macon and taught pupils from 1876 to 1963, has been moved to the Franklin County Museum in Franklin. The old wetland is now the Macon Lakes Waterfowl Production Area.
