About Concord

Concord is a village of 126 in southwestern Dixon County, reached by Spur S-26B off NE 116, about 3 miles south of US 20 and a few miles east of Laurel. The Dixon County Fairgrounds are here, and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's Haskell Agricultural Laboratory is 1.5 miles east.

History

Swedish immigrants settled the area from 1878, and the town was platted in 1883 when the Omaha Road built its branch from Wakefield to Hartington. In 1890 Concord had about 100 people, a church, stores, a blacksmith, a druggist and implement dealers; the Concord State Bank opened that year. The population peaked at 261 in 1920, and Concord High School closed in 1958.

The Haskell Agricultural Laboratory was established in 1957 on 320 acres donated by the C. D. Haskell family and studies cattle, swine, crops and irrigation. The Dixon County Fair is held at Concord every July (July 8–12 in 2026). This Concord is not the 1856 settlement of the same name near the mouth of Lime Creek, which was a rival for the county seat.
