Victoria Springs State Recreation Area, 43400 Highway S-21A about 6 miles east of Anselmo, opened in August 1925 and is one of the oldest units of the state park system. Its 60 acres in a narrow valley on Victoria Creek hold a 5-acre spring-fed lake (non-powered boats and electric motors only; paddleboats in summer) stocked with rainbow trout each spring, with bass, bluegill and catfish. There are 21 electric campsites, 6 basic sites, two modern two-bedroom cabins, showers, a reservable shelter and a 2-mile nature trail. Judge Charles R. Mathews built two log cabins here in 1874, one of them the first post office in Custer County, and the District 2 schoolhouse of 1888–89 was moved here from New Helena. A park entry permit is required. Park office (308) 749-2235; reservations 1-844-637-2757.
