St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran German Church, known as the “White Church,” stands with its cemetery about 10 miles east-northeast of Hayes Center. The congregation was founded in 1886 and built a sod church in 1887; the present frame church went up in 1925, with stained glass added in 1944. The church closed in 1973 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 16, 1985.
