The bluff rises about 800 feet above the North Platte River and was a landmark on the overland trails. The Civilian Conservation Corps finished the Summit Road, with its short tunnels, in 1937. Road repairs that began in 2025 can close the road to cars for short periods, so check with the park before you go.
