Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park, 82034 Fort Ave., just north of Elyria in Valley County (mail goes through Burwell), preserves an infantry post the Army built in 1874 to protect settlers in the North Loup valley and abandoned in 1881. Named for Maj. Gen. George L. Hartsuff, it has original buildings of local lime-and-gravel concrete, including the post headquarters, barracks, officers’ quarters, guardhouse and hospital, with reconstructed shops and stables; it became a state historical park in 1961 and marked its 150th anniversary in 2024. Buildings open May 1–September 30, Wednesday–Sunday 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and by appointment; admission $5 (ages 3–12 $1) plus a Nebraska park entry permit. Phone (308) 346-4715.
