History
Eddyville was platted when the Kearney & Black Hills railway, a Union Pacific line, came up the Wood River valley in 1890. The place had been known as Congdon; the railway promoters named it for Eddyville, Iowa, itself named for the trader J. P. Eddy. Volga German families settled around Eddyville and the Buffalo community to the west. By 1920 Eddyville had about 250 people, a twelve-grade high school, a bank, a farmers’ elevator and the Eddyville Shipping Association, which sent cattle, hogs and sheep out by rail each week. It peaked at 254 people in 1910.
