About Hubbard

Hubbard is a village of 153 on NE 35 in western Dakota County, about 10 miles west of Dakota City. Danish Alps State Recreation Area, with Kramper Lake and a large campground, is near town. Hubbard has St. Mary Catholic church, Trinity Lutheran Church, Krueger's Korner and the Hubbard Mini Mart; its students attend Emerson-Hubbard schools in Emerson.

History

The Dakota City Land Company laid out Hubbard in 1880 on the Omaha Road, naming it for Judge Asahel W. Hubbard, a Sioux City lawyer and congressman who was the first president of the Covington, Columbus & Black Hills Railroad. The post office opened in 1881, with John F. Myers as first storekeeper and postmaster. In 1890 the town had about 200 people, a hotel, two general stores, a drugstore, a livery and a blacksmith.

St. Mary Queen of the Apostles parish was founded in 1886. The population was 236 at the 1980 and 2010 censuses and 153 in 2020. Danish Alps State Recreation Area, built by the Papio-Missouri River NRD on Pigeon and Jones creeks and named for the area's Danish settlers, opened on August 1, 2015.
