About Etna

Etna is the site of a former community in southwestern Custer County, along NE 47 about 19 miles south of Arnold and 15 miles north of Gothenburg. State historical marker No. 530 stands on Etna Road just east of NE 47; the town site was about 1½ to 2 miles farther east. A mailbox at the marker holds a history and a guest book.

History

The community, at first called Etha, had a post office from 1885 to 1895 about 3 miles northwest of the marker, and a second office about 1½ miles east of it until 1921. In 1907 it gained a school, a store and a telephone exchange; Andrew Ostergard enlarged the store in 1912, and it handled mail informally until it closed in the early 1930s. The telephone exchange closed in 1933 and the school in 1966. The Custer County Historical Society, the people of the Etna community and the Nebraska State Historical Society erected the marker in 2017.
