About Trumbull

Trumbull is a village of about 198 people (2020) in the northwest corner of Clay County, with a small part in Adams County, at 1,877 feet about 8 miles northeast of Hastings and 10 miles west-northwest of Harvard. Since 2000 its students have attended Doniphan-Trumbull Public Schools in Doniphan. The Trumbull Community Center, owned by a nonprofit formed in 2008, is the gathering place. Trumbull is on Central Time.

History

Trumbull was platted in 1886 when the Burlington & Missouri River built a line through, and named for a Burlington official; the post office here had been called Ludlow. In 1890 it had about 120 people. Nelson M. Holderman, who received the Medal of Honor with the “Lost Battalion” in 1918, and legislator Fannie Wylie are counted among its notable people. A local story, never confirmed, says the man who gave the townsite banned the sale of liquor in it.
