About Edgar

Edgar is a city of 428 people (2020) in southern Clay County, at 1,729 feet, about 8 miles east-southeast of Fairfield and 11 miles south-southeast of Clay Center. It has the Brodstone Family Medical Center clinic, a Cornerstone Bank branch, a city campground, Regal Lanes bowling and the low-power station KCGW-LP. Edgar is on Central Time.

History

Henry Gipe took a pre-emption claim on the townsite and built its first house, of sod, and Andrew J. Ritterbush opened the post office in his log cabin in June 1872. The St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad was finished to Edgar that July. The town was surveyed in May 1873, Mrs. Julia Pond taught the first school that fall, and Edgar was incorporated on March 15, 1875. Local accounts say the place was first called Eden and was named for the son of a pioneer settler. By 1890 Edgar was a city of the second class on the St. Joseph & Grand Island, part of the Union Pacific, with 1,105 people, the most it has had.
