Doughboy, Nebraska

Doughboy is a small populated place in Cherry County, Nebraska, in the Gillaspie Election Precinct, one of the many named ranch-country locations scattered across the vast Nebraska Sandhills. Its unusual name honors the World War I infantrymen known as "doughboys."

The Doughboy post office was established June 14, 1919 -- shortly after World War I ended -- and named by C.E. Barnes, who had served as a doughboy in the U.S. Army during the war. The office operated until 1935.

History

Doughboy's post office opened June 14, 1919, in the immediate aftermath of World War I. First postmaster C.E. Barnes, himself a veteran who had served as a doughboy (the period nickname for U.S. Army infantrymen), gave the office its distinctive name. The post office remained in service until 1935.
