Nehawka, Nebraska
Nehawka is a village in Cass County, Nebraska, with a population of 173 at the 2020 census. The area was settled in 1855, and the village was platted and named in 1874-75, growing further after a railroad line was completed through town in 1887.
History
Nehawka shares its name’s root with nearby Weeping Water — both derive from the same Otoe/Omaha word for "rustling water." Local tradition holds that surveyor Isaac Pollard chose "Nehawka" for this village because "Weeping Water" was already taken by the neighboring town. Nehawka’s early economy included a stone quarry and apple orchards. Its 1934 log-cabin library building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village is the hometown of George L. Sheldon, Nebraska’s 14th governor and the state’s first native-born governor, and Nehawka’s six-man football team was featured in Life magazine in November 1937.
