About Eagle

Eagle is a village of 1,065 in far western Cass County on US 34 (O Street), about 15 miles east of Lincoln. NE 43 ends here, and NE 63 begins just east of town. It has a municipal pool, Eagle Elementary of the Waverly district and a Saturday farmers market, and Eagle Raceway draws race fans from across the region.

History

The Eagle post office opened in 1869; local tradition says settler Sam Prouty named it for an eagle he had shot. The town itself was founded in 1886, when the Missouri Pacific built its Weeping Water–Lincoln branch across land Sam McClintic sold the railroad, and Sam English opened the first general store. The store of neighboring Sunlight, a small post-office village to the east, moved to Eagle once the railroad came. By 1890 Eagle had 175 people, two elevators, the Bank of Eagle and the Eagle House hotel.

The railroad is gone, and its grade is now the MoPac Trail East. Eagle held its centennial in 1986. As Lincoln commuters moved out, the population grew from 302 in 1960 to 1,047 in 1990 and 1,105 in 2000, its highest count.
