About Alvo

Alvo is a village of 115 in western Cass County on NE 63 (Russell St.), about 4.6 miles north-northeast of Eagle and 6–7 miles south of I-80 exit 420. It is in the Waverly school district.

History

Settlers were farming the area by 1869. Alvo grew up as a station on the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific, and its post office opened in 1891. By local tradition it was named for the first child born at the new depot, a railroad man's daughter. A Brethren (Dunkard) church that first stood west of Elmwood was later moved to Alvo, and the Brethren Cemetery remains.

The census count peaked at 215 in 1940 and was 115 in 2020. The James and Margaret Greer Farmstead, about 3.4 miles west-northwest, was listed on the National Register in 2011.
