Ulysses is a village in Ulysses Township, Butler County, Nebraska. With a population of 196 residents (2020 census), it has grown modestly from a low point of 171 in 2010, though it remains below its 2000 population of 276.
History
Ulysses' post office was established in 1869, and the village was named in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, the Civil War general and 18th President of the United States. Like many Butler County communities founded in this era, Ulysses grew as a farm-service center for the surrounding township that shares its name.
Ulysses has been the hometown of several notable Nebraskans, including Chester Hardy Aldrich, who served as Nebraska's governor and later as a state supreme court justice, and William H. Diers, a speaker of the Nebraska Legislature. The village also produced Ray Prochaska, an NFL player and coach, and is linked to George E. Waldo, a U.S. Representative from New York.
