History

Bruno was founded in 1887 when the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad reached the site, and its post office opened on April 7, 1888. Many early settlers came from Moravia, and the town is named for its capital, Brno, in a spelling the railroad changed. Early Bruno had the Bruno State Bank, a flour mill, a hotel, general stores, saloons and blacksmiths. The population peaked at 245 in 1910 and 1920.
