History

Brainard was located and surveyed in 1878 as a station on the Omaha & Republican Valley branch of the Union Pacific, whose grade is now the Oak Creek Trail. Thomas Logan opened the first store and became the first postmaster; the post office dates from December 1877. The village is named for the missionary David Brainerd, with the spelling changed. Czech families were prominent among the early settlers. The population peaked at 468 in 1920. Jerome Hanus, archbishop of Dubuque from 1995 to 2013, was born here in 1940, and actor Lyle Talbot, born in Pittsburgh, grew up here.
