About Baker
Baker is a ghost town in Ware Township in northern Boyd County, about half a mile south of the South Dakota line, east-northeast of Anoka.
History
The Baker post office was established on November 24, 1891, at first on the Dakota side of the line; it was briefly called New Baker in 1895 and in 1896 moved 1¼ miles south into Nebraska. Baker had stores, churches and other businesses, but the post office closed on April 2, 1906, and the town was gone by 1916. By 1931 only the Catholic and Lutheran churches, a baseball diamond, and the Baker and Old Settlers’ cemeteries remained. Sources name the namesake as Leonard C. Baker or Fred Baker.
