Saint Edward was platted in 1879 and incorporated shortly thereafter, taking its name from Saint Edward the Confessor, the patron saint venerated by early Catholic settlers who were prominent among the community's founders. Like many Nebraska towns that developed along rail lines in the 1870s and 1880s, Saint Edward grew quickly as homesteaders arrived to farm the surrounding land, and it established a stable identity as a farm service community.
