About Ingleside

Ingleside is the area about 3 miles west of Hastings that grew up around the state hospital. The campus, at 4200 W. 2nd St., now houses the state’s Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center for girls (YRTC-Hastings), which moved here in 2021.

History

The Legislature authorized an asylum for the chronically ill in 1887 on land given by Hastings, and it opened on August 1, 1889, with 44 patients from Lincoln. It was renamed several times — Nebraska State Hospital, Ingleside Hospital for the Insane (1915), Hastings State Hospital (1921) and Hastings Regional Center (1971) — and held more than 1,100 patients in 1916 on up to 630 acres. The post office named Ingleside served the institution from 1905 to 1972. More than 1,000 former patients are buried in the hospital cemetery, where a memorial was dedicated in 2012. Part of the campus became a prison in 1987, and older buildings were torn down from 2020.
